Who was Bob Marley?
While many people are familiar with his music, they may not know who Bob was and what his impact was on Jamaican culture. Raised by his mother (who was a teenager at the time) and her family, Bob would later search for his paternal heritage only to be rejected by his father’s relatives. This rejection inspired his songs. Bob began playing his music and realized his songs were a way not only to earn money to escape poverty but also to inspire change in the world.
As Bob continued to grow, Jamaica gained its independence, which in turn sparked a Civil War. At this time, Bob created inspiring music to speak on behalf of the people and changed his whole country. According to the locals, there has never been another artist like Bob Marley who has inspired so much political change, conversation, and practical change.
Apart from music, Marley was also an unofficial ambassador for Jamaica and introduced to the world not only reggae, but also Rastafarianism, rooted in ideas of personal and spiritual freedom, peace and love. He advocated for the rights of black people, spoke up against poverty and was a fighter against western oppression.
At the rear of the house is the spot where gunmen snuck in one day in 1976 in an attempt to assassinate Bob Marley, evidenced by bullet holes preserved in the walls.
