Two steps to getting started with miles
1. Join an airline with frequent flier membership
All companies have their own membership program and most of them are part of the same group. Once you are a member, you can add the points to a unique program and use these points to buy your desired flight. However, be aware the priority is according to the status, so a Platinum member has more chances to get upgraded compared with a Gold member, for instance.
2. Get a good credit card
Of course, the more you fly, the more miles you will get. Otherwise, I suggest you invest in a good credit card to start getting miles. Even though there is an extra cost, credit cards offer great perks, including at least one mile for a dollar you spend to say the least. You can consolidate all your expenses to your card and start getting miles to travel more and preferably for free in the future.
This is the minimum you need to getting start with miles.
